Government power has been abused for centuries. People in the government are the highest - up people one can be at. They hold great power but with that comes responsibility. Some Presidents or other members of government abuse this power and take advantage of what they are given. Abuse of power is defined as follows: " The commission of an unlawful act, done in an official capacity, which affects the performance of official duties. Malfeasance in office is often grounds for a for cause removal of an elected official by statute or recall election." Presidents such as Nixon and many others have grossly abused the power that they are given.
There are systems in place to check in on people of power and to make sure they are not taking advantage of it. Situations like "Watergate" and many others let citizens see what the government is really up to and what they are actually doing behind closed doors. It exposes their lack of integrity. It is up to us, the people, to make sure things like this don't go unrecognized. We decide who we let into our government, that is why we are a democracy, and it is up to us to make sure we know that who is running our country does the best that they can.
One example is the XYZ Affair in 1797. President John Adams sent delegates to Paris to work out issues that we had with the French searching U.S. ships that were in route to England. These delegates refused to negotiate unless they were bribed. It is up to us to make sure we elect people who will not do things like this as will be integrable.
