White Like Me Movie

This country has overcome decades of racism and segregation. We have come a long way from the 18th century when black people were considered property. Although we have made great feats on racial inequality, it is still an issue today. There are currently more black people in jail than there were slaves a decade before the Civil War. Struggles for equality, although incomparably less, still exist. David Ernest Duke is a prominent American white supremacist, white nationalist politician, white separatist, anti semitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, convicted felon, and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. He received at least 60% of the white vote. This was not long ago, occurring in the mid to late 1900s.

The GI bill provided many privileges for whites returning from war. This disproportionately excluded a huge majority of the black people coming home from war. The same people who fought for the very country that rejects them, come back to find white people still treated like kings compared to them and getting special treatment.

Barack Obama was the first african american to be elected president (technically). This is one of the most historical things that has ever happened in this country. Only decades earlier black men couldn't even vote without the fear of being judged, threatened, or even hurt and killed. Now there has been a black man in office. Although racism does still exist and inequality does occur, african americans have never been in a better position in this country. In certain states, however, he only received 10%-11% of the white vote. So even though he was elected president, that doesn't mean all of the white population want him there. Many people chose not to vote for Obama, even democrats, specifically because he is black. So, racial bias still does affect the way we view others.

Mass incarceration is something that does not affect everyone. For the criminal justice system, racism is still present. White men are almost 10 times more likely to get away with a crime even when guilty. That is why there are so many more african americans in prison. Being colorblind is not a thing when it comes to incarceration.

Racism against white people is also an issue. People are so focused on racism for african americans but the issue of racism against whites is something rarely discussed. Some people even say that people are more racist towards whites than they are against blacks. It is said that "the good ole days" for white people are over and it keeps getting more difficult. It is said that by 2042 whites will no longer be the majority.
