In this town hall meeting we discussed pro and anti slavery. I had John C. Calhoun on the side of pro slavery. He was an American statesman for the Democratic party and a political theorist from South Carolina. Calhoun was the 7th Vice President of the united States, never being able to get elected president. he served as Vice President from 1825-1832. As a young congressman from South Carolina, he helped steer the United States into war with Great Britain and established the Second Bank of the United States. He is known for strongly defending slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics.
Calhoun also served as U.S. Secretary of war and briefly Secretary of State. He was one of the leading and most remembered "War Hawks." He began his political career as a nationalist, modernizer, and proponent of a strong national government protective tariffs.
This means that he replace old methods or theories with new ones. He also restricted imports from other countries through tariffs. Calhoun became known as the "Cast Iron Man"
for his rigid defense of white Southern beliefs and practices. He owned dozens of slaves in Fort Hill, South Carolina. He said that slavery, rather than being a “necessary evil,” was a “positive good.”
